Why put the solar collectors in orbit?
Energy from the sun is 5 times more powerful in orbit than it is in the brightest desert on Earth. It's never night in orbit so the collectors can operate at 100% capacity non-stop, 24 hours a day.

Won't this system cost a lot, after all we're talking about space?
Any type of major power plant costs several billion dollars to build. A powersat will cost about one and half times a traditional ground-based power plant however this extra initial cost is quickly paid back because because a powersat doesn't consume fuel or require many staff. Ultimately a powersat over a 30 year life provides the least expensive energy of any of the traditional energy sources.
